Some people have one dog, others have a couple…and yesterday I met a young lady who had 9! But how many dogs are too many?
This question heavily rests on the home environment of the person who owns the dogs. As a rule of thumb, your dog should be able to sit, lie or sleep in a room on its own if it chooses. Dogs can display many different negative behaviours if they have no access to alone/quiet time.
If you live in a one-bedroom apartment, having more than two dogs is not a good idea. Of course, there are instances where you may have had the dogs first and had to downsize.
Another factor that determines how many dogs you have is, can you afford them? Can you afford to feed them, take them to the vets and the dentist if they are in need of treatment?
Next, how much exercise can you provide? All dogs need exercise, and you must provide enough exercise for all of the dogs. You also need to consider whether or not you should walk all of your dogs at the same time.
If you have a young dog that wants to go on a long walk, but an old dog who is struggling to walk down the street… you should consider walking them separately for the benefit of both dogs.
Another thing to consider before adding another dog to your home, is how well behaved and trained your current dog is. Many people make the mistake of buying/adopting another dog while they already have a dog that has behaviour problems.
