' I just want to be able to take my dog to the pub!"

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

This is a request we get quite often here at Rosie To The Rescue, and while the picture of having a pint with your 4 legged best friend may seem picturesque...for many dogs it is quite unreachable.

There are so many things at play here. Not only must we look at the dogs temperament but we must look at the breed of the dog, the breeding line and its daily life as well as previous training and life experiences.

Temperament:

Some dogs do not have the temperament needed to settle down nicely in a busy pub. Dogs hear and smell far more around them than we do. In the spot you want to sit at in the pub, there have been hundreds of other people and dogs there. So many dogs go into sensory overload, and quite honestly it's easy to understand why.

Breed:

It's no good getting a high energy dog or a dog who's breed was specifically bred to be alert, and then wondering why they can't settle while you have a pint. Your dog relaxing while you have a pint at home is not the same as relaxing when you are having a pint in a pub with so many different sights, sounds and smells.

There are also breeds who's genetic makeup cause them to be quite nervous dogs. Again, do not get a dog breed that is going to be a bit anxious in general, and expect them to adjust for you to enjoy a bloody pint! It's not fair on them.

Breeding line :

Many people buy puppies from those who, on a whim, decide to breed their dog(s). These people are one of the worst you could buy from. They usually have no breeding experience, do not have much breed knowledge, do not know anything about breeding for certain qualities ( temperament is not something they usually consider as

they just ' felt like' breeding their dog and making a bit of money), and almost never get their puppies vaccinated or health checked before going to new homes.

This type of breeding is one of the leading causes of why we have so many dogs whose baseline are anxious.

Yes, you will get a cheaper puppy here than from a proper breeder. But not only will you possibly end up with a dog who's disposition is nervous, but you will likely end up having high vet bills later on. This is because the people who breed them didn't pay to have certain checks on the parents to make sure genetic health problems would not be passed down. You could even end up with bills for medication to help with general anxiety.

This may not be what most people want to hear, but it's what you

need to hear. As a Canine behaviourist and dog lover, I am not here to tell owners what they want to hear. I am here for the DOG. I am here to advocate for dogs and ensure that their lives are of high quality, and that their welfare is not compromised because people, quite literally have unrealistic expectations.

The dog comes first.

Some dogs are fine at the pub, and other dogs never will be.
