Most of us have had the experience of walking into the living room to see a wet patch on the sofa and panic thinking it is urine….and we are relieved when we find out it is actually saliva.
Unfortunately, this is often a sign that a dog is stressed or suffering anxiety.
They may also excessively lick their own paws and bed. Some dogs lick themselves so much that they start getting bald patches.
If your dog does this, the worst thing you can do is punish them! Doing so will actually cause their behaviour to escalate, to the point they may start toileting in the home.
To put a stop to excessive licking, it is important to analyse your dog’s life. Find out what is possibly causing their stress and make lifestyle adjustments that will give them a healthier state of mind.
This can often be easier said than done, and it may take weeks or months for your dog to stop licking excessively.
